I don’t know about you, but it sure feels good to walk outside and feel the warmth of the sun. I know, for a lot of people there is no happy middle ground as it may be too hot when you walk outside. As for me (and particularly my wife Susan) we can tolerate the heat better than we can tolerate the cold. Hence, we may still root for our Buckeyes in Ohio, but we don’t want to live there!
On to some new innovations and people that I’m really excited about at our offices. First, many people swear by their Transitions® lenses. They provide an adjustment to vision in bright sunny conditions as well as under hazy conditions. They are truly a “lifestyle” lens that adjusts their darkening to environmental conditions. I realize that others of you swear at Transitions®. Part of this is because they continue to be darker upon re-entering the office or home after being outdoors. This can be a nuisance. I’m not sure that’s been fixed yet, although there have been modest improvements over the last five years. What is new is that Transitions® are now coming in more than just brown and grey. In fact, we are going to have four new colors (sapphire, emerald, amethyst and amber) and flash mirror coatings. We think this will give Transitions® a bit of a boost for those who are style conscious and fashion forward. I know our Opticians are excited about the new Transition® lenses and we will be having an introductory gala to introduce them as one of the first offices in the area where they will be available. These galas will be at Cool Springs on Tuesday, July 24th and Donelson on Wednesday, July 25th.
Secondly, I had this great dream that I shared with our staff many years back. That was for our patients, perhaps children in particular, to be able to select their frame and watch it be manufactured by our staff, in our on-site lab through 3D printing. In the mall you can buy stuffed animals at Build-a-Bear. I look at my concept for the future as “Build-a-Pair”. We are not quite at the point where technology can allow this dream to be feasible – at least within our office. But we have contracted with a company in the Netherlands who produce high quality work in the 3D printing of customized frames. In the middle of July, we are going to make this available to our patients at the Cool Springs office. What I am most excited about is not just the appearance of the frames and materials available, but the level of customization we can provide for patients in the fit of the glasses. We will be taking a 3D image of our patient’s head, complete with exact measurements of the bridge of their nose, the length of their temples, the height of each ear, etc. I don’t know about you, but after breaking my nose in a college football game, there is no frame on the market that is perfectly positioned for my irregularly shaped nose. We all have minor imperfections, subtle nuances that make our facial symmetry slightly different from one side to the other and certainly from other people. Our new 3D imaging technology will allow us to provide an unparalleled level of customization in the fit of glasses. You will be hearing more news from our Community Relations Director, Lyndsey, about these frames, which are marketed under the designer name of Roger Bacon. We already have two of our staff members who have ordered their frames and are in the process of enjoying their customized frame and personalized fit.
I am also pleased to announce that we have added two tremendous doctors to our team. Dr. Aimee Jacobs joined us in March of this year after three years in practice in South Carolina. She and her husband, Jimmy, are originally from the St. Louis area. Indeed, Dr. Jacobs did her graduate eye care training at the University of Missouri, St. Louis. She is a Cardinals fan! More than that she is a great person and an outstanding clinician with areas of emphasis and specialty in contact lenses for near sighted control, specialty contact lenses for irregular corneas and eye disease. If you have met her you know already what an engaging personality she has. If you haven’t met her, I encourage you to not hesitate to make an appointment with Dr. Aimee Jacobs. You will not be disappointed.
Additionally, one of our former Externs, Dr. Daniel Kelly, has joined our practice and is concentrating in the areas of vision therapy, sports vision performance enhancement and traumatic brain injury therapy. Daniel will also sometimes be seeing patients in our main eye health and vision clinic at Cool Springs. Dr. Kelly is a former soccer standout (I guess he is still a soccer standout!) and played for both US national teams as well as Indiana University. Daniel’s expertise in neurobinocular disorders which include convergence, focusing, muscle alignment and visual processing, memory integration and functional skills necessary to interpret what we see and read, are outstanding. He joins Dr. Rachelle Altstadt on our team in Performance Vision Therapy and in the main clinic in providing post-traumatic brain injury therapy and sports vision at the Competitive Edge. We welcome Dr. Kelly who also practices with his mother in Goodlettsville, as a welcome addition to our team. Like Dr. Jacobs, I can’t emphasize enough what a great guy Dr. Kelly is. Much like the rest of the doctors on our team, you’ll enjoy seeing him, whether you are an athlete wanting to improve your visual performance or have other needs.
Summer and sunshine tends to bring a positive energy to our lives. Through the addition of new Transitions® colors, customized Roger Bacon 3D printed frames, and two great doctors, I am pretty pumped about summer both in our offices and in Middle Tennessee.
