A Quick Look at Omega 3
A number of our patients use Omega 3 essential fatty acids (fish oil) for eye health purposes. We have four (4) strong recommendations when choosing from the myriad of choices on the health food aisle.
1. Third party tested - make sure that someone other than the manufacturer has evaluated and validated the ingredients.
2. No fishy smell - if the Omega 3 smells fishy it has oxidized or rancid and should not be used.
3. 1,000 - 2,000 mg. per day - This is our recommended dosage for dry eyes and for the possible prevention of macular degenerative changes.
4. EPA greater than DHA - These are the essential fatty acids and we like to see EPA in a 2:1 or 3:2 ratio over DHA.
We recommend “Nordic Naturals” which can be purchased at our office, in our online store here or through a health food store.
